Life is A Gamble

Anywhere we go, the term gambling is inherent, through online bets, poker games, races and even sporting events in schools and international events; gambling is everywhere. Some consider it as a sin, others as leisure but what is gambling all about?

Gambling, refers to the probability of the odds of winning, in an event or a game, providing entertainment to many and business to some. It is also coined as taking risks or risking something of value based on chance. It is referred to as a vice, frowned upon by religious sects and communities be it of legal or illegal practice. To others, gambling can be noble in form of lottery or sweepstakes where anyone can participate, to raise money for charities and other non-profit organizations.

The word gamble is derived from the Middle English word gamen that means game or fun. In ancient times, gambling is a form of entertainment to build relationships and camaraderie among people until it became serious in form involving money for larger stakes.

Gambling is varied in terms of choices. It is being practiced by market traders in stock exchange, basing their speculations on previous day's outcome that can either cause the economy's progression or collapse. It can also be in form of decision making for every day's work; deciding to quit your job and look for a better opportunity or move out of state or out of country. But the most common form of gambling is thru cards and races.

Gambling typically involves money as a wager. For the fact that it can make the person feel like living on the edge, it becomes an addiction that goes out of bounds when it involves pawning of other valuables or resort to stealing just to keep up with that addiction. Though there are some states and countries that have made gambling a legal practice, there are still some forms that are illegal like the dog fighting or drag racing on the streets. Whatever form they may be, it is still considered gambling.

No one can really say for sure when gambling can be stopped. It can only be experienced at one's expense and the choice remains with the person still if he/she decides to let go of it or make it a habit. No one can even admit that he/she has not tried gambling since our daily tasks are based on choices and probabilities with the risk of consequences, whether constructive or not.
